As scraptheftalert.com, or Materialstheftalert.com as it will be known in the future, increases usage, ReMA is seeing more success stories of material being recovered and arrests made. Approximately $3.5 million worth of material has been recovered with the system.
In June and July 2025, we have had several success stories on scraptheftalert.com. Most have on-going investigations, so the information about recovery and arrests are limited.
There were two recent successes in Michigan. In June, Scraptheftalert.com received a report of aluminum conductor cable solen valued at $2,000. This material was recovered with the assistance of a recycler who called the local police after the alert was broadcast. That same month, the system received a submission involving stolen truck batteries that were recovered by a recycler. The batteries were valued at $1,600. Arrests have been made, and the investigations are ongoing.
In July, $18,500 worth of telecommunications wire were recovered in Indiana. The deputy reported that within one hour of the alert, a nearby county reached out. The county informed him that they received a call from a recycling company that had purchased a large amount of copper. When the deputy followed up, law enforcement officials and the victim of the theft were able to identify the copper wire. The recycler provided a video of the process of receiving the material until the suspects were paid. The deputy made arrests, and the prosecutors now have the case.
These cases happen all the time and we do not always receive the follow-up from the cases. It is important that we continue to encourage recyclers and law enforcement to use the system and encourage law enforcement and victims to tell us about successes of recovered property.
